Out-of-school girls’ lives in Zimbabwe: what can we learn from a storytelling research approach?

This paper focuses on the experiences of out-of-school girls in Zimbabwe. It draws a research strand SAGE (Supporting Adolescent Girls’ Education), UKAid programme funded through Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office’s (FCDO) Education Challenge (GEC) initiative. Using digital storytelling approach highlights critical events that have changed girls’ lives impacted how they see their futures. The explores insights made possible by this alternative methodology. Crucially, it challenges often-static representation ‘marginalised’ ‘out-of-school’ Sub-Saharan Africa illustrating unpredictability individual circumstances perceptions these, within broader contexts persistent vulnerability factors. Drawing capability also offers new into perceived value purpose school for girls. findings implications conceptualising more creative, contextually appropriate policies practices young people who miss out formal school.
